HOUSTON — Jan Paul van Hecke stated that his €60 million transfer fee will not alter his character following his move to Tottenham Hotspur.
According to ESPN on Tuesday, Spurs have settled on a sum that marks a significant increase compared to the £1.8 million Brighton had previously paid NAC Breda in 2020.
Sources indicate to ESPN that a sell-on fee is included if Van Hecke moves from Tottenham for over €60 million in the future.
During a pre-match press conference for the Netherlands ahead of their World Cup match against Sweden at NRG Stadium, he was asked how much he would consider paying for himself, to which he replied: “It’s always difficult to pinpoint specific values for myself.”
“I would accept whatever the club deems appropriate. I’m just thrilled this transfer became a reality. While I can say it doesn’t affect me, I am naturally proud of this achievement because it is fantastic, but it won’t change who I am.”
Van Hecke expressed gratitude towards his national team coach, Ronald Koeman, for allowing him to finalize the transfer during the tournament.
“There have been numerous discussions, and I haven’t been involved in every stage of it,” he noted. “It was important for me, and the head coach afforded me the time to concentrate on this transfer. I genuinely appreciate that, as it signifies a significant progression in my professional journey. I am excited to represent my former club, which boosts my confidence as well.”
“But now I will be playing for one of the most prominent clubs in the UK. This step is crucial for my future. However, my main focus now is on the World Cup.”
The Netherlands drew with Japan in their opening match after conceding a late goal and will now face a Sweden squad that recently secured an impressive 5-1 victory over Tunisia to kick off Group F play.
