Jesse Marsch, former assistant coach of the United States men’s national team (USMNT), has shared that he often had to “beg” American players to participate in singing the national anthem. Marsch, now the head coach of Canada, made these remarks during a press conference prior to his team’s opening World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on Friday.
“Each of these players embodies Canadian pride,” he expressed. “When they put on the jersey, they represent their country with immense pride, especially when they hear the national anthem.
“In the U.S., we occasionally had to encourage players to sing the anthem. But these Canadian athletes sing it passionately, showcasing their pride in being Canadians and their desire to represent what Canada signifies.”
Marsch, who has also managed clubs like RB Leipzig and Leeds United, served as an assistant to Bob Bradley for the USMNT from 2010 to 2011. During that period, they drew 1-1 against England but were eliminated in the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup by Ghana after extra time.
After his stint at Leeds, Marsch was considered for the USMNT head coaching position in 2023, but the role was ultimately given to former coach Gregg Berhalter.
He now leads Canada into their third World Cup appearance, marking their first as a co-host.
“I believe the players are our greatest asset and the best representation of our nation,” he stated. “Their character, work ethic, and commitment to one another are unparalleled.
“That’s the spirit we want to showcase, not only against Bosnia and Herzegovina but throughout this tournament,” he said.
