Jesus Hails Dream Night…

MILAN — Gabriel Jesus is quickly finding his rhythm just one month after returning from a significant injury hiatus.

The Arsenal striker made only his third start of the season and netted two goals in a vibrant first half, helping lead his team to a 3-1 triumph over Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday.

“It’s a dream night. I always envisioned being a footballer,” Jesus told Amazon Prime. “As a kid, I watched a lot of Serie A, so being here and scoring in this stadium brings tears to my eyes because it has always been my dream.”

“Every experience, whether positive or challenging, has its reason. I learned that during my 11 months away from the game.”

Jesus returned to action in December, primarily appearing as a substitute up until this match, with his previous starts coming in domestic cup games.

However, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta opted to include the Brazilian in the starting lineup at San Siro, replacing Viktor Gyökeres, who has struggled to find his place following his transfer from Sporting CP in the summer.

“Everyone wants to start,” Jesus said. “I respect the game. I’m 28, not a kid anymore, so I understand football dynamics.”

“I’m very pleased that Viktor came on and scored. I’m thrilled to have scored myself and that Vik was able to contribute too.”

Jesus opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a clever finish, reaching out to connect with a mis-hit Jurriën Timber attempt.

This marked his first Champions League goal in over two years, the last being against Lens in November 2023.

Inter equalized just eight minutes later courtesy of Petar Sucic, but Jesus promptly restored Arsenal’s lead in the 31st minute.

After a corner from Bukayo Saka found Leandro Trossard at the far post, Trossard headed it back across for Jesus to finish with a header.

Gyökeres replaced Jesus in the 75th minute and netted Arsenal’s third goal nine minutes later.

“This is fantastic; we’ve missed Gabby dearly,” Arteta said. “This will boost his confidence and the team’s, as we now have diverse options in that position.”

“Having players perform at that level, with Viktor also making a significant impact, only strengthens our team, which is what we’re aiming for.”

This victory secured Arsenal a place in the last 16 of the Champions League while also marking the first time in the club’s history they have won seven consecutive European matches.

Though Arsenal has yet to win the Champions League, they reached the final in 2006, where they were defeated by Barcelona.

Arteta’s team currently leads the Premier League, with a seven-point cushion, and will face Manchester United this Sunday.
