Bayern Munich overcame their long-standing rivals, Real Madrid, in a thrilling encounter that culminated in a 4-3 victory for the German squad, securing their place in the Champions League semifinals.
Luis Díaz and Michael Olise netted crucial late goals for Bayern, enabling them to triumph over Madrid on Wednesday.
“What an incredible night,” stated Harry Kane following the match. “It was a wild game, truly. Given the quarter-final stage and the significance of the matchup, experiencing such highs and lows throughout the first half was quite remarkable.”
This win marked Bayern’s 16th consecutive match without defeat and secured a 6-4 aggregate win, their first two-legged triumph over Madrid since 2012.
The quarterfinal clash concluded on a contentious note as Madrid’s side expressed their anger over referee Slavko Vinčić issuing a second yellow card to substitute Eduardo Camavinga in the 86th minute for a minor foul on Kane.
Díaz scored just three minutes later, slotting the ball inside the right post, followed by Olise’s spectacular goal in stoppage time that sealed the win, resulting in a 6-4 aggregate victory after Bayern had taken the first leg 2-1 in Madrid.
Bayern is set to face reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals.
“PSG is undoubtedly one of the top teams in Europe, and they’re the reigning champions for a reason,” Kane remarked. “We’ve had a challenging match against them earlier in the tournament, so we anticipate an open game filled with individual talent and pressing. We hope to come out on top.”
Bayern, fresh off breaking the Bundesliga goals record last weekend, has the opportunity to clinch their 13th league title in 14 years this Sunday if Borussia Dortmund fails to secure points the previous day.
Additionally, Bayern is set to compete against Bayer Leverkusen in the semifinals of the German Cup on April 22 as they aim for a repeat of their historic treble from 2013.
