Harry Kane has expressed to ESPN that the only outcome that will meet the expectations of both the England team and the nation is a victory at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Since advancing to the semifinals in the 2018 World Cup, England has achieved steady success in international tournaments, yet they have yet to secure their first major trophy since 1966.
The Bayern Munich forward reflected on the disappointment of finishing as runners-up in Euro 2024 last year, noting that the only way to silence the “negative noise” surrounding the England squad is to claim victory next summer.
“We’re at a point now where only a win will satisfy both ourselves and the country,” Kane stated.
“During the last Euros, even after reaching the final, there was still significant negative commentary surrounding us.”
“We understood that unless we emerged victorious, that noise would persist, and it did. That’s just part of the experience. Since 2018, we’ve built a reputation with a semifinal appearance in the World Cup, followed by a final and quarterfinal, consistently demonstrating that we are among the elite teams globally.”
“Entering this tournament, there’s a level of expectation. With us currently sitting fourth in the world rankings, we are seen as one of the favorites. We must recognize that and carry that responsibility into the tournament.”
“We’ve experienced many positive moments in these last eight years as a national squad, but for me now, it’s all about winning, particularly the biggest trophies.”
“We definitely possess the talent to achieve this; now we need to demonstrate the ability to manage those critical moments.”
“Major tournaments are the pinnacle of one’s career—where you feel the highest pressure and excitement. I’m eager to see how I perform and how the team fares as well.”

As he prepares to lead England into yet another major tournament, Kane acknowledged that captaining his national team represents the highest honor of his career. At 32, he first took on the captaincy at age 24.
“Sometimes, when you’re in the moment, you may not fully recognize what you’re accomplishing and how young you really are,” Kane remarked.
“My dream was always to play for England, but to captain the team was the ultimate achievement of my career.”
“Growing up, I was a huge England supporter, even more so than a club fan, so leading my country has always been an important goal for me. I consider myself fortunate to have been doing it for several years now; time flies.”
“I never take this role for granted; I am fully aware of its significance.”
