Jürgen Klopp has expressed to ESPN that James Milner’s recent accomplishment of setting the record for the most Premier League appearances is a milestone that may never be surpassed, asserting that none of Liverpool’s successes would have been achievable without him.
Milner matched Gareth Barry’s record of 653 Premier League appearances when he came off the bench for Brighton in their match against Aston Villa on February 11, subsequently breaking it a week later. He made his Premier League debut at just 16 years old with Leeds United in November 2002 and has since played for Newcastle United, Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and recently Brighton.
The 40-year-old was in Brighton’s starting lineup for their match against Brentford on Saturday, marking his record 654th Premier League appearance.
“I can’t believe it,” Klopp said to ESPN. “Being part of something timeless is really special. Achieving such a number of appearances feels like landing on the moon. It’s a rare feat!”
Over his 654 appearances, Milner has gathered an impressive array of trophies, including 61 caps for England. He won the Premier League with Manchester City in 2012 and 2014, in addition to claiming the FA Cup in 2011 and the League Cup in 2014. Milner signed with Liverpool in June 2015, just months before Klopp joined in October that same year. Under Klopp’s management until Milner’s transfer to Brighton in June 2023, Milner played a crucial role in helping Liverpool secure the Premier League title in 2020, the FA Cup in 2022, the League Cup in 2022, and the Champions League in 2019.
“None of the success we had at Liverpool would have been possible without him,” said Klopp, who left Liverpool in June 2024, as part of an ESPN feature on Milner’s record-breaking achievement. “That’s simply the truth.”
Now serving as Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer, Klopp characterized Milner as “probably the most disciplined, dedicated, and professional footballer I’ve ever worked with.” He continued, “Reaching such a milestone requires immense determination. Early in our coaching relationship, it was clear I needed to earn his trust, as his influence is significant in various aspects.”
Klopp utilized Milner in various positions, including a stint at left-back during the 2016-17 season. Although Milner started as a winger at Leeds, he has since played every outfield position throughout his impressive 24-year Premier League career.
“When people think of James, they usually describe him as an honest and excellent professional,” Klopp remarked. “However, I can tell you he is capable of doing it all.”
“If you’re fixed in one position, over time, a club will sign someone either as good as you or better—someone younger, faster, or stronger. Being versatile extends your career. But what stands out most is his skillset. He possesses everything and only showcases a fraction of his potential. Both his right and left foot are exceptional; he’s quick, adept at dribbling, and competently handles both tight and open spaces. His attitude is remarkable, and he knows to reserve the flair for match day. From a skill perspective, he ranks among the top five players I’ve had the privilege to work with.”

While Milner has yet to disclose future plans as his contract is set to expire this summer, he remains focused on his performance at Brighton. Those close to him suggest he may feel uncomfortable with the attention surrounding this recent achievement, but Klopp takes immense pride in Milner’s success.
“Tell me, is there anyone out there who stands a chance to reach such a tally? Probably not,” Klopp emphasized. “I hope that after he eventually reaches game No. 780 or whatever it may be and retires, he pursues whatever path he chooses next. The world truly needs individuals like him.”
“He possesses an enormous heart, evident through his charitable work and his demeanor in the locker room or on the field. I couldn’t be happier for him on this outstanding achievement.”
