Kompany: Karls Real…

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has criticized rising star Lennart Karl for referring to Real Madrid as his “dream club,” calling it a misstep.

Seventeen-year-old Karl made his debut for the German champions back in August, quickly establishing himself as their youngest goalscorer in both the Champions League and the Bundesliga.

However, the academy product stirred up some controversy during a fan club event last weekend when he hinted at aspirations for a future outside Bayern.

“FC Bayern is a massive club, and it’s a dream to play here. But I definitely want to play for Real Madrid at some point. That is my dream club, but let’s keep that between us,” Karl said.

Kompany addressed the situation ahead of Sunday’s matchup with Wolfsburg at Allianz Arena, suggesting the young player’s comments were a simple “communicative error.”

“I try to take a step back and view it from a distance. Everyone encounters challenges at some point, and it’s essential to keep perspective,” Kompany stated at a news briefing.

“Lennart puts in a lot of effort every day, contributing to the team both offensively and defensively. He consistently performs well, including in team meetings.”

“He may have made a minor mistake in communication, but he’s focused on what matters, and he’s had a strong week of training.

“He has earned his playing time through hard work, and his talent is clear—he’s on the right path. He spoke with Christoph [Freund, sporting director] and Max [Eberl, director of sport] and apologized, which I appreciate. I’ve avoided discussing it with him.

“If he ever doesn’t give his all, then he would have an issue with me. But he’s been training very well and performing admirably.”

Sacha Boey, Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala, and Joshua Kimmich will miss the match against Wolfsburg due to injuries, while Manuel Neuer is set to return following a hamstring injury.

Neuer’s contract will expire at the end of the season, and Bayern plans to evaluate his situation in March, coinciding with his 40th birthday.

“Manuel is back in shape and will start in goal,” Kompany confirmed.

“He has accomplished incredible things for FC Bayern. Turning 40 soon is remarkable. He continues to perform at an exceptionally high level, which is extraordinary. We’ll have a discussion and assess the situation.”

Bayern Munich holds an eight-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga heading into the Christmas break, while Wolfsburg sits in 14th place.

“Wolfsburg’s strengths are evident—they possess strong attacking capabilities and can be a threat to score,” Kompany noted.

“They’ve found the net frequently in recent matches. We can’t underestimate them.”
