The Spanish football club Celta Vigo has reached out to Madonna and their supporters in hopes of ending a 36-year quest to locate the team jersey worn by the pop icon at their Balaidos stadium concert back in 1990.
Madonna’s performance on July 29, 1990, in Vigo was notable for being the city’s first significant international concert and was one of the concluding acts of her famed Blond Ambition European tour.
The LaLiga club expressed its desire to reclaim the “unique and irreplaceable garment” for inclusion in its historical archives.
“That night, the artist wore a Celta Vigo jersey featuring the number 5 of [former Celta defender Jose Manuel] Espinosa,” stated a release from the club.
“This extraordinary moment, captured by photographer Víctor de las Heras, became a defining image in the club’s and the city’s history. Subsequently, the jersey disappeared, and its whereabouts have remained a mystery. Celta Vigo has privately sought the jersey for years, but efforts had stalled.

“After 36 years, the club is now appealing to all Celta Vigo fans to assist in the search for the jersey, with the goal of preserving it in their historical records. For Celta Vigo, this garment is invaluable and represents a part of the club’s emotional legacy. The club is eager for any information regarding the jersey Madonna wore on stage at Balaídos. A link has been provided for anyone with relevant information.”
Celta’s president, Marián Mouriño, has penned an open letter requesting Madonna’s help, highlighting the significance of the jersey to the club.
“Your image in our jersey has become legendary and is part of Celta’s history that extends beyond the pitch,” she stated.
“Many may view this as merely an anecdote, but I believe that nothing occurs by coincidence. Although it wasn’t the sole jersey you wore on stage, that image has acquired a unique significance over time. It reflects a deeper understanding of what you championed at the time: challenging the status quo and standing firmly against those who dictate what you can or cannot do.
“At the club I lead, we resonate with this way of being in the world.”
In her letter, Mouriño mentioned that the club would “dedicate a gesture of appreciation” to Madonna during a Friday home match against Real Madrid, with the intention of asking her: “Do you have it? If you have any clues about its location or wish to assist us, please reach out in a private message.”
