Southampton, in excellent form, ended Coventry’s impressive six-match winning streak as they secured a 2-1 win at the CBS Arena.
Flynn Downes scored the opener just after half-time by capitalizing on a rebound, followed by Kuryu Matsuki extending Southampton’s lead with only five minutes left to play.
Victor Torp managed to score a late penalty for Frank Lampard’s team in stoppage time, creating a glimmer of hope, but the Sky Blues faced their second defeat at home this season.
This victory allowed Tonda Eckert’s squad to keep pace with sixth-placed Wrexham in the playoff race, while the Saints maintained their unbeaten streak across all competitions, now at 12 matches.
The match began cautiously, although Cyle Larin nearly put Southampton ahead when he narrowly missed from a header by Matsuki.
Larin, who had netted a last-minute equalizer against West Brom earlier in the week, was one of three new faces in the Southampton lineup.
A significant setback for Southampton occurred when Leo Scienza, who had to leave the pitch during the tie against West Brom, was unable to be fit for this match.
Coventry relied heavily on Ephron Mason-Clark down the left, who outpaced James Bree and delivered a cross to Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, but the Japanese winger’s header went over the bar.
Luke Woolfenden then sent a header wide from close range after receiving another cross from Mason-Clark, as Coventry continued to pose a threat from the flanks.
Southampton had Daniel Peretz, on loan from Bayern Munich, to thank for an incredible save that denied Liam Kitching from scoring on his century of appearances for Coventry.
Haji Wright, who had been rested during Coventry’s midweek victory over Preston, returned to the starting XI and nearly added to his tally of 16 league goals, but his volley from Mason-Clark’s cross narrowly missed.
Southampton stunned the home crowd only three minutes after the break.
Matsuki’s cross slipped past both Larin and goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, striking the post before Downes met it to score from inside the six-yard box.
Ryan Manning nearly added a second goal for Southampton six minutes later when his free-kick missed the right post by inches.
Wright, having scored in six consecutive matches since the New Year, found himself with a clear opportunity to level the score but directed his header from Milan van Ewijk’s cross straight at Peretz.
Southampton’s second goal came through an unlikely deflection, as Bree’s corner inadvertently struck the leg of the unmarked Matsuki, rolling past an exposed Rushworth.
Torp then converted a penalty, which he had earned after being fouled by Shea Charles.
As Coventry pressed forward in search of an equalizer, Peretz was ultimately relieved to hold onto a shot from Romaine Esse following a chaotic scramble in the box.
