Dual nationals Brian Gutiérrez and Richard Ledezma have completed their one-time switch from the United States to the national team of Mexico, as confirmed by a representative from the Mexican federation to ESPN.
On Tuesday, Mexico announced that “FIFA has confirmed the eligibility” of the two American-born players who have been called up for friendly matches against Panama and Bolivia this month, indicating that their switch is now finalized.
The Chivas teammates had previously played for the United States at both youth and senior levels but are now set to represent Mexico in the upcoming World Cup opener against South Africa on June 11.
To be eligible for selection this summer by manager Javier Aguirre for the World Cup, both players needed to submit a one-time switch, as mandated by FIFA for changing national federations.
There was ongoing speculation about whether they would opt for Mexico over the U.S., particularly after their transfer to Chivas. The confirmation finally arrived on Tuesday.
Ledezma made one appearance for the U.S. senior team in 2020, while Gutiérrez played twice in 2025. However, both players appeared to be unlikely candidates for inclusion in USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino’s World Cup roster this summer.
