Last season was one to forget for Leicester City Women, as their five-year stay in the WSL ended in relegation—mirroring the men’s drop to League One.
They managed just two wins in 22 matches and finished with a -41 goal difference, prompting questions about their future, including whether they would keep playing at King Power Stadium and if budgets would be cut.
The club responded quickly, sanctioning departures for players who wished to move on and using the fees to reinvest in the squad. Whether it will be enough remains to be seen, but Tierney sees a chance to build a new Leicester that others will envy.
She reflected on the club’s journey, noting that when she first arrived they trained on local parks rather than at Belvoir Drive, and called the progress since then remarkable. Her aim is to make Leicester a destination club that attracts and retains players, because she believes that’s the level they can reach.
Tierney joined from Sheffield United in 2020, has worked under seven managers, won promotion to the WSL in 2021, and helped the team reach the Women’s FA Cup semi-finals in 2024.
She accepts change won’t happen overnight, but hopes Leicester can become a sustainable WSL side rather than a yo-yo team. Not one to leave a job unfinished, she backs the club’s direction and the changes needed, and wants others to share her connection to Leicester—so that when she eventually departs, the club is in a stronger position than when she arrived.
