COTTBUS, Germany — RB Leipzig has announced the tragic passing of one of its fans following a medical emergency that occurred during their German Cup match against Energie Cottbus on Tuesday.
According to a statement from Leipzig on X, the supporter became unwell while entering the stadium and subsequently died at a medical facility. The club emphasized that the incident occurred “without external interference.”
“At this time, the focus shifts away from soccer,” Leipzig expressed in their statement.
Cottbus officials reported that the individual collapsed as away fans entered the stadium and sadly passed away en route to the hospital.
The atmosphere in Cottbus’ stadium turned somber as supporters from both teams silenced their chants following the announcement regarding the incident. Leipzig emerged victorious with a 4-1 scoreline.
