Liverpool are nearing a season-long loan deal for Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, with an option to buy. He is expected to undergo a medical on Sunday.
The 27-year-old centre-back played a key role in Barcelona’s recent success, contributing to three La Liga titles in the last four seasons and finishing the previous campaign as club captain.
Although contracted until 2031, Araujo made only 11 league starts last season as Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi became the preferred central defensive pairing.
Since arriving from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018, he has made over 200 appearances for Barcelona.
