Liverpool is undergoing significant behind-the-scenes changes following the departure of Michael Edwards, the football chief executive officer for Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
Edwards, who was previously the sporting director during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure until 2022, returned to FSG in 2024 with the intent to help expand the ownership’s portfolio by acquiring a second club. However, with no visible progress made on this initiative, he has decided to resign immediately, even though a year remains on his contract.
In the wake of his departure, FSG president Mike Gordon is anticipated to take a more active role in the day-to-day management of Liverpool.
Edwards’ exit adds to the sense of transition at Anfield this summer, as former AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has already replaced Arne Slot as head coach. Additionally, there are questions surrounding the long-term status of sporting director Richard Hughes, who recommended Iraola and whose contract is set to expire in the summer of 2027, particularly amid speculation linking him to Al Hilal from the Saudi Pro League.
In a statement released on Friday, FSG characterized Edwards’ departure as a “planned transition after achieving key strategic objectives.” However, sources informed ESPN that Liverpool’s American ownership was unsuccessful in their attempts to persuade Edwards to remain, as he expressed dissatisfaction regarding the lack of progress in expanding their ownership structure.
FSG examined over 20 potential clubs, including French team Bordeaux and Spanish side Málaga, before halting their plans to add another team to their portfolio earlier this year.
Edwards leaves after having played a pivotal role in transforming Liverpool’s football operations, contributing to their winning the Premier League title in 2025.

“It has been an honor to return to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club during such a critical period,” Edwards expressed. “I leave confident that Liverpool is in a strong position, with exceptional personnel, a clear direction, and a solid foundation for future success.
“When I returned, I was eager not just to help navigate Liverpool through this significant transition, but also to aid in shaping FSG’s broader football aspirations. While this larger plan ultimately took a different direction than we initially intended, I am proud of what our team accomplished in presenting the ownership with a wide array of well-thought-out and developed options for the future.
“I want to express my gratitude to Mike, John [Henry], Tom [Werner], and everyone at FSG and Liverpool for their support and camaraderie, especially to the fans, whose passion makes this club truly special. I will always cherish my time as part of its narrative.”
