Arne Slot has revealed that midfielder Wataru Endo may be sidelined “for a long time” due to a “serious” ankle injury sustained during Liverpool‘s 1-0 victory against Sunderland.
Endo was taken off on a stretcher in the second half after it appeared he got his foot stuck in the ground.
Starting the match at right-back, the Japan international is the latest in a series of injuries to players in that position, joining Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong on the sidelines.
“Yes, it looks serious, but we won’t know the extent until tomorrow,” Slot stated. “It doesn’t seem good, and I’m not certain if it’s his ankle or foot. However, if it’s his ankle, we’ll need to evaluate that tomorrow. I anticipate he will be out for an extended period.”
“The definition of ‘long’ is hard to pinpoint right now, but you can hardly believe the challenges this right-back position has presented us this season.”
Liverpool’s win over Sunderland means they are only three points behind fourth-place Manchester United. Slot praised his team’s resilience, noting they became the first side to defeat Sunderland at home in this season’s Premier League.
“We had the most significant chance in extra time with Mo Salah,” said the Liverpool manager. “I’m pleased with our defensive efforts; we had to block several shots.”
“I want to highlight Wata [Endo], who despite his injury, continued to compete in challenges. That mentality was evident throughout the entire team. Ibou [Konaté]Alexis Mac Allister] making crucial tackles.
“It was also incredibly beneficial that our fans were so supportive; this stadium is known for its home atmosphere, but our away supporters were fantastic, especially during the last 20 minutes when the team needed them most. They may have felt that things had gone wrong so often towards the end of games, and it was inspiring to see them rally behind us. I hope every time we lead, both at home and away, our fans can be just as encouraging.”
