Harvey Elliott says he is ready for a fresh start at Liverpool and eager to enjoy his football again after a difficult loan at Aston Villa.
He moved to Villa last summer on a season-long deal that included an obligation to buy for £35m if he reached 10 appearances. Villa opted early not to activate that clause, so the 23-year-old featured only nine times for a total of 277 minutes. Unai Emery later called the situation “embarrassing for everyone involved.”
Elliott returned to Merseyside ahead of schedule and has played in both of Liverpool’s pre-season matches under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
Reflecting on the loan, Elliott said he wanted to push himself outside his comfort zone and believed it would help his development, but acknowledged it ultimately didn’t work out.
Speaking after Liverpool’s 1-0 pre-season win over Wrexham in New York, he described his Anfield return as a second chance, noting that a new manager and staff offer another opportunity to impress and earn trust.
He expressed gratitude to Villa for how he was treated and said the experience, while challenging, was another step in his learning. Now, he’s focused on securing his place in the team or at least within the squad.
A Fulham academy graduate who made his Premier League debut at 16, Elliott joined Liverpool in 2019. He was a regular under Jurgen Klopp but featured less during the title-winning campaign under Arne Slot, making 18 league appearances in 2024-25 before moving to Villa, where he still contributed to the club’s Europa League triumph.
Elliott admitted the loan was mentally demanding, something he wouldn’t wish on any player, but said he holds no grudges and is proud to have been part of a historic achievement for Villa.
Looking ahead, the Euro 2025 England U21 Player of the Tournament says his future remains undecided and he plans to speak with Iraola later in the season. For now, he’s concentrating on being at his physical and mental best and making his case on the pitch. He added that if he keeps showing desire and work rate, he’ll feel justified in asking about his role.
He concluded by saying he’s delighted to be back, smiling from the first day of training, and wants to feel free on the pitch, play as much as possible, and enjoy it—because, for him, there’s no better feeling than representing Liverpool.
