Real Madrid has announced that Trent Alexander-Arnold sustained a quadriceps injury to his left leg during their 3-0 victory against Athletic Club on Wednesday. A source has informed ESPN that he is expected to be sidelined for at least two months.
He left the match in the 55th minute at San Mamés, with Raúl Asencio taking his place.
“After conducting tests today on Trent Alexander-Arnold, our medical team has diagnosed him with a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his left quadriceps. We will monitor his recovery,” the club stated on Thursday.
The right-back appeared to injure himself after a kick, as he was seen limping along the sidelines before requesting to be substituted.
Additionally, midfielder Eduardo Camavinga also exited the match due to an ankle issue.
This season has already seen Alexander-Arnold’s time at the Bernabéu — following his high-profile transfer from Liverpool last summer — significantly hindered by injuries.
After earning his spot in the Madrid starting lineup during the Club World Cup, he suffered a thigh injury in September that kept him out for a month.
With Dani Carvajal unavailable as well, midfielder Federico Valverde had to step in to play right-back.
Since returning from injury last month, Alexander-Arnold faced some criticism for his performances, which coincided with the team’s struggles, but he appeared to improve during the match against Athletic.
Information from ESPN’s Rodra contributed to this report.
