Makeshift Man United Scrap…

MANCHESTER, England — Under the guidance of Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, the team has achieved victories against notable rivals such as Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea, but the recent win against Newcastle United on Boxing Day may be the most gratifying of them all.

Despite dealing with injuries and international call-ups that left his squad stretched thin, Amorim’s makeshift lineup secured a narrow yet crucial 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.

The match-winning goal came from a spectacular shot by Patrick Dorgu, who played as a right winger despite being a left-back. Under significant pressure from Newcastle in the second half, United’s defense, featuring Leny Yoro, Tyler Fredricson, Ayden Heaven, and Tyrell Malacia, held firm to maintain the clean sheet.

This mix of youth and players on the fringe of the squad allowed United to record only their second clean sheet of the season, marking a notable achievement as it was their first Premier League win without Bruno Fernandes since March 2022.

Amorim made a tactical shift, opting for a back four for the first time since his arrival from Sporting CP over a year ago. This decision paid off, particularly in the first half, but the manager expressed his satisfaction most with the resolve and commitment of his players during a challenging match.

“I’m very pleased, especially with our second-half performance,” Amorim stated. “We endured as a team. While we can say we defended well because we kept a clean sheet, Newcastle had their opportunities. Sometimes, luck is necessary.”

“If we maintain this spirit, we’ll win many more games. I believe it’s essential for us to realize that we can achieve victories through teamwork and determination.”

In his pre-match notes, Amorim stated there would be “no excuses” against Newcastle, but the increasing number of challenges he faces cannot be overlooked. Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui are competing in AFCON, Fernandes is sidelined with a hamstring injury, and his chosen replacement, Kobbie Mainoo, is also injured. Additionally, senior defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire are unavailable.

Moreover, Mason Mount was substituted at halftime, and 18-year-old Jack Fletcher came on to replace him. Additionally, Lisandro Martínez, making his first start since recovering from a knee ligament injury in February, and Luke Shaw both left the pitch before the match concluded, along with Casemiro.

Notably, Malacia, who had been sidelined during the summer, made a comeback with his first appearance since January, while Fredricson, primarily with the Under-21s all season, was called upon too.

Despite these obstacles, United managed to hold on.

Newcastle’s efforts yielded 16 shots, but Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens didn’t face many challenging saves; only three shots were on target, with full-back Lewis Hall coming closest to scoring when he hit the crossbar in the second half.

Newcastle has managed only seven goals in nine away matches, explaining their single away win at St James’ Park this season.

“It’s a tough one for us to analyze,” said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. “We came into this match with a real chance to seize control. The second half improved, but we failed to create clear-cut opportunities, leading to our deep disappointment.

“Our away form in front of goal hasn’t been adequate. One could argue we deserved more from this game, but we’ve fallen short too often in away matches.”

While Howe works to address the team’s away woes, Amorim’s United is steadily building a series of commendable performances. The results haven’t always matched the effort put forth, yet there have been positive takeaways from their last four outings. In their previous match against Aston Villa, they were unable to secure a win.

However, they triumphed against Newcastle against the odds, which will provide Amorim with reassurance as he navigates the upcoming month without several key players.

This experience may have also revealed that he can rely on the likes of Dorgu, Heaven, and the returning Martínez. Matheus Cunha has also stepped up in Mbeumo’s absence.

This scenario is not Amorim’s long-term approach for United but rather a temporary plan. He hopes his depleted squad can sustain their challenge for European qualification until Mbeumo, Amad, De Ligt, and crucially, Fernandes, return.

With this victory, United climbed to fifth in the league standings, suggesting that Champions League football could be available if they can find the consistency needed to seize the opportunity.

If they maintain this fighting spirit throughout the season, success is within reach.
