Manchester City solidified their position at the top of the Women’s Super League (WSL) with a convincing 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Dutch forward Vivianne Miedema made a significant impact early on, netting two goals within the first 20 minutes, one just three minutes after the other. Kerstin Casparij added a third shortly after the break.
With this win, City now holds an 11-point advantage over second-placed United, who had previously gone unbeaten in nine WSL matches since their last defeat to City in November.
Chelsea has the opportunity to reduce the gap and potentially overtake United into second place when they face Aston Villa on Sunday.
After an initial save from United’s goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce>, who deflected a close-range attempt from Miedema over the crossbar, City took the lead in the 17th minute with Miedema heading in from a corner.
City doubled their lead just two minutes later as Miedema scored again, this time heading in from a cross by Aoba Fujino.
Tullis-Joyce made another impressive save, denying Khadija Shaw’s attempt before City seemed to have a third goal when Rebecca Knaak scored with a header, only for it to be disallowed due to a foul by City midfielder Yui Hasegawa> in the lead-up.
City did ultimately score their third goal four minutes into the second half as Casparij found the net from close range after Lauren Hemp made a swift run down the left and delivered a cross.
Although United, looking to recover from a narrow 3-2 first-leg defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, pressed hard in the last 20 minutes, they were unable to secure a consolation goal.
Shaw nearly added a fourth for City in stoppage time but shot wide from 12 yards out.
