On Wednesday, Manchester City announced the signing of United States women’s national team midfielder Sam Coffey on a contract lasting 3½ years.
Sources have informed ESPN that the transfer fee reached $875,000 (£650,000).
“Sam’s reputation as one of the finest in the sport is well-known, and we are thrilled that she has chosen Manchester City over other options,” said Therese Sjogran, director of football for Manchester City Women, in a statement. “We believe she possesses the skills necessary to excel at City and in the WSL, and we are eager to see how she enhances our already outstanding squad.”
“Sam is currently at her peak performance level, and her decision to join us showcases the significant strides we’ve made as a club and our ambitions for the future.”
Manchester City is currently six points ahead in the Women’s Super League, positioning themselves well to secure their first league title since 2016.
City has reportedly had their eyes on Coffey for some time, looking to bolster their midfield depth since last summer while waiting for the right opportunity after previously inquiring about her.
According to one source, Coffey was eager to take on the challenge of playing in Europe.
“I believe I’m at a stage in my career where I’m ready and settled as a professional. This feels like the perfect time for me to challenge myself in this way,” Coffey expressed to the club media. “Having it officially confirmed and knowing I’m here is truly thrilling. I couldn’t be more prepared and excited about this opportunity.”

“From the moment I started playing soccer, I’ve always aspired to play professionally in Europe—it’s a dream I need to pursue,” Coffey shared in her farewell video on the Portland Thorns website. “I would never forgive myself if I didn’t take this opportunity.”
Coffey has earned 42 caps for the U.S. national team, scoring five goals and providing four assists while establishing herself as a vital part of the squad. She was part of the team that triumphed at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
