Manchester United suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City in their opening match of the 2026-27 Premier League.
Just 17 minutes into the match, United fell behind as Semi Ajayi scored from a corner. Hull’s Nobel Mendy extended their lead with a strong header in the 38th minute.
Both goals came from set pieces that left United struggling to defend effectively. Despite their efforts in the second half, United never looked likely to mount a comeback in what turned out to be a disappointing season opener.
Before the match, there was some excitement with the announcement that Marcus Rashford would wear the No. 9 jersey this season after returning from a loan at Barcelona. However, Rashford started the game on the bench and came on as a substitute at halftime.
Even with Rashford on the field, United couldn’t overcome the two-goal deficit, marking a challenging first league match for Michael Carrick as the permanent coach.
The overall performance was lackluster, highlighting the long road ahead for United, who haven’t been champions since Sir Alex Ferguson’s era in 2013. Based on this show, they appear far from mounting a serious title challenge.
Hull, under manager Sergej Jakirovic, finished sixth in the previous season’s second tier. They capitalized on Southampton’s Spygate controversy to earn promotion to the Premier League, and their debut match at the KC Stadium could not have gone any better.

“It’s massive – you can see what it means to everyone,” said Hull’s Regan Slater, whose free kick assisted the second goal. “We picked up where we left off.”
As for Carrick and United, it’s back to the drawing board ahead of their next match at Old Trafford against another newly promoted team, Ipswich Town.
“We have a lot to improve on – it was never going to be perfect,” Carrick stated.
“One game doesn’t alter the overall trajectory,” he continued. “It doesn’t change the direction of the football club.”
