Manuel Ugarte has undergone knee surgery following an injury he sustained during the World Cup, as confirmed by Manchester United.
The midfielder was taken off on a stretcher in Uruguay‘s final group match against Spain.
Ugarte shared on social media that he had suffered “the most serious injury a footballer can face.”
Medical examinations indicated a knee ligament injury that necessitated an operation.
A statement from United released on Wednesday stated: “Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has successfully undergone surgery to repair a knee ligament injury sustained while representing Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup.
“He will now enter the rehabilitation phase of his recovery, with careful management from the club’s medical and performance teams.
“Everyone at Manchester United sends their best wishes to Manuel for a smooth recovery and will support him throughout his rehabilitation.”

Although United had been open to offers for Ugarte this summer, any potential transfer is now on hold as the 25-year-old is anticipated to miss most of the upcoming season.
Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have joined the squad at Old Trafford to strengthen Michael Carrick’s midfield.
United has not ruled out the possibility of making another midfield signing in light of Ugarte’s injury.
