Masterclass Highlights Why…

MANCHESTER, England — Just moments after scoring to give Manchester United the lead against Aston Villa on Sunday, Matheus Cunha turned to acknowledge Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes delivered the crucial pass that dismantled the Villa defense, allowing Cunha a straightforward chance. This gesture highlighted Fernandes’ composed presence in a match that often felt chaotic.

More significantly, it underscored that Fernandes, at 31, continues to be United’s pivotal player.

His corner kick set up Casemiro’s header for the opening goal in United’s 3-1 victory at Old Trafford, further solidifying their position in the top four and moving them closer to Champions League qualification.

With two assists in the match, Fernandes has now totaled 16 assists in the Premier League this season, surpassing David Beckham’s club record of 15 from 26 years ago. He now needs four more to tie the Premier League record of 20 assists, held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

With eight matches remaining, this achievement is well within reach.

“He’s been performing at a high level for quite some time,” interim coach Michael Carrick remarked about Fernandes’ contributions. “In key moments, whether he’s scoring or assisting, he consistently makes a difference. I don’t have much more to add about Bruno that I haven’t said before, but he was exceptional today.”

Last summer, Fernandes was linked to a lucrative move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, but opted to remain in Manchester.

However, in a recent interview with Portuguese media, he admitted uncertainty about his future. It’s clear that ensuring Fernandes stays will be a top priority for Manchester United this summer.

With a £57 million release clause in his contract, part of the decision lies with Fernandes. A place in the Champions League would undoubtedly influence his choice, and he is actively contributing to that goal.

His goals and assists this season have directly earned United 25 points. Only Robin van Persie (38 points in 2012-13) and Eric Cantona (26 points in 1993-94) have more in a single season. Like Beckham, van Persie, and Cantona, Fernandes is carving out a legacy among United’s all-time greats.

“From a club perspective and for future planning, I prefer not to get involved too much,” Carrick stated regarding Fernandes’ future. “Bruno is someone we cannot afford to lose. Beyond that, it’s challenging for me to elaborate. He’s crucial for us and someone we want around.”

“He’s vital to our play, and we need to keep supplying him in positions where he can excel. He’s had some significant moments recently.”

Regardless of Fernandes’ decision, United is facing a midfield overhaul this summer.

Casemiro has indicated his intention to leave, although after scoring, he gestured to the fans in the Stretford End, who chanted “one more year, one more Casemiro.”

Carrick is not anticipating a change of heart from the Brazilian, placing the responsibility on the recruitment team to find a suitable replacement to fill Casemiro’s role. His goal was his seventh this season, marking his best total since scoring six for Real Madrid in 2020-21, and six have come from set pieces, which is more than any other player in the league.

Whoever steps in will face a tough challenge.

“Once a decision is made, things become clearer and everyone understands the situation,” Carrick said. “Casemiro’s impact has been tremendous, both on the pitch and in the locker room. It’s never about finding an exact replacement; it’s about assessing what the squad requires and adapting accordingly. Case has accomplished remarkable things during my time here, and it’s been a pleasure to work with him.”

The club must also make a decision about appointing Carrick permanently while addressing the necessity for a Casemiro replacement, making this summer crucial for Manchester United.

With numerous priorities to address, club executives, including CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, will be eager to avoid the complication of replacing Fernandes’ invaluable contributions.

In this latest match, Fernandes again demonstrated his significance, providing two assists that showcased his ability to influence the game. Fernandes remains Manchester United’s key player, propelling them towards Champions League qualification.
