Bryan Mbeumo scored twice to lead Manchester United to a 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid in a friendly match held in Stockholm on Saturday.
United found themselves trailing early in the match when Arnau Ortiz‘s cross unexpectedly sailed into the net.
However, the tide turned for Michael Carrick’s squad just eight minutes after halftime. Young talent Shea Lacey was brought down in the penalty area, allowing Mbeumo to convert from the spot.
The striker then added a second goal in the 74th minute, securing the win for United as Atlético Madrid hit the post twice. Notably, 15-year-old sensation JJ Gabriel made his first-team debut in the match.
“We came into the game with a clear plan, and everyone executed it well, making the experience truly enjoyable,” Mbeumo shared with MUTV.
“We’ve been training hard for matches like this. Our primary objective is to be ready as the season approaches. Everyone performed admirably,” he added.
United aims to improve on their third-place finish from the previous season in the Premier League, with Carrick officially appointed as head coach after his interim role last season.
“I really enjoyed the match; there were numerous positive aspects that we’re keen to build on,” Carrick reflected on Saturday’s performance. “We’re looking to continue the progress made over the past seven months, and I see many promising signs.”
“While we may not be at our ideal stage yet, I thought there were plenty of positives to take away from the game, both individually and as a team. Our senior players looked fit and strong, and the younger players performed exceptionally well.”
New Chelsea recruit Andrey Santos also made a noteworthy debut, starting in midfield and playing 82 minutes.
This match marked Manchester United’s third preseason game, following a loss to Wrexham in Helsinki and a dominant 5-0 victory over Rosenborg in Trondheim.
Carrick’s team will remain in Sweden, next facing Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg next Saturday.
