Lionel Messi played for 63 minutes as Inter Miami suffered a significant 3-0 defeat against Alianza Lima during their preseason opener in Peru on Saturday.
This match marked Miami’s first outing since Messi guided them to their inaugural MLS Cup title by defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps on December 6.
Miami showcased noticeable rustiness as they fell behind quickly, conceding two goals within a span of six minutes in the first half by veteran Peruvian forward Paolo Guerrero. The 42-year-old, a former star of Bayern Munich, scored in the 29th and 35th minutes, giving the home side control at Estadio Alejandro Villanueva.
Miami had an excellent chance to reduce their deficit early in the second half when Rodrigo De Paul delivered a pass to Luis Suárez, who was unmarked in front of the net. Unfortunately, the 39-year-old Uruguayan, who extended his contract for one more year over the offseason, misfired his shot over the crossbar.

Coach Javier Mascherano replaced the South American trio of Suárez, Messi, and De Paul shortly after the hour mark as they work on regaining their fitness for the upcoming season.
However, there was further disappointment for Inter Miami when Luis Ramos scored past their new goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair in the 73rd minute, securing Alianza’s win.
The offseason has brought significant changes for Miami, with notable departures including the now-retired Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, alongside new signings. St. Clair, as well as Sergio Reguilón and David Ayala, made their debuts in a Miami jersey during this match.
Inter Miami will aim for an improved performance as they continue their preseason with a trip to Medellin, Colombia, to face Atlético Nacional next week.
The defending champions are set to kick off their MLS season against LAFC on February 21.
