Messi, CR7 Jerseys…

Former England defender and five-time Premier League champion with Chelsea, John Terry recently auctioned over fifty items from his personal collection through the American firm Goldin Auctions.

The auction grossed more than $695,000, including buyer’s premium.

Among Terry’s consigned items were a match-worn and photo-matched Lionel Messi jersey from Barcelona, as well as a signed, match-worn and photo-matched Cristiano Ronaldo jersey from Manchester United.

The Messi jersey was from the October 18, 2006 Champions League group stage match against Chelsea, while the Ronaldo jersey came from the April 26, 2008 Premier League match against Chelsea. The Messi jersey fetched $183,000, and the Ronaldo jersey sold for $115,900, setting a record for a Ronaldo jersey.

Also sold were match-worn signed jerseys from Thierry Henry of Arsenal and Gianluigi Buffon of Juventus. Henry’s jersey was from the October 18, 2003 match against Chelsea during the “Invincibles Season,” where he scored in the 75th minute, while Buffon’s gold jersey was from the second leg of the Chelsea vs. Juventus UCL Round of 16 on March 10, 2009. The Henry jersey went for $98,820, and the Buffon jersey sold for $22,265 — both record amounts for jerseys from these players.

A collection of Terry’s own jerseys, including those from England, Chelsea, and Aston Villa, was also auctioned, along with jerseys (many signed) from notable players like Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Paolo Maldini, Cesc Fabregas, and others.

Terry also put several trophies for auction, the standout being his 2007 replica player-issued FA Cup champions trophy, which sold for $26,840. Additionally, multiple captain’s armbands from his time with England, Chelsea, and Aston Villa were sold, along with several pairs of match-worn cleats and two pairs of his shin guards.

An unspecified portion of the auction’s proceeds will benefit the John Terry Foundation, which supports disadvantaged youth in the United Kingdom.
