Messi Returns to Argentina…

Lionel Messi has resumed training with Argentina after receiving permission to compete in Inter Miami‘s MLS match against Atalanta on Saturday.

The 38-year-old received a call-up from Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni for the team’s fixtures against Venezuela and Puerto Rico, but he was absent from the squad that played in the 1-0 victory over Venezuela on Friday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, as Scaloni opted not to include Messi in the lineup.

In an unusual arrangement, Messi was allowed to participate in Miami’s crucial MLS match as the team aims to secure a better position in the Eastern Conference standings to gain home-field advantage in the playoffs.

Earlier this week, Miami head coach Javier Mascherano expressed his desire to have Messi play on Saturday between the two Argentina friendlies, though he was uncertain if that would be possible.

Messi scored the opening goal in a 4-0 victory that served as the team’s final game at Chase Stadium. The club will transition to its new venue, Miami Freedom Park, in 2026.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is expected to play again at Chase Stadium for Argentina against Puerto Rico on Oct. 14 following his return to the national squad.

“This match will be part of the preparation for future commitments and will allow the technical staff to refine strategies,” stated Argentina.

“Leo’s return generates significant excitement and is expected to create an electric atmosphere for this new international challenge.”
