Mexico concluded their World Cup preparations with an impressive 5-1 win over Serbia on Thursday evening, just one week prior to their World Cup opener at Estadio Azteca.

After initially trailing 1-0 due to a goal from Serbia’s Petar Stanić, El Tri responded with strikes from Johan Vásquez, Raúl Jiménez, and Luis Chávez, along with two own goals from the opposition, to secure a dominant victory.

“We’re entering the World Cup in great form, full of optimism and positive energy,” stated Mexico coach Javier Aguirre.

“After 20 or 22 months of preparation, selecting the players was a challenging task with many obstacles along the way. However, I believe that beyond today’s match and its result, we are on the ascent.”

In front of an enthusiastic audience at Toluca’s Estadio Nemesio Díez, this victory marks Mexico’s sixth win in eight matches this year, extending their unbeaten record to 6 wins and 2 draws in 2026.

“We’re starting off strong. I think we were the superior team today, and that was evident on the field. I truly believe we’re capable of achieving great things in this World Cup,” commented Mexico midfielder Brian Gutiérrez after the match.

Mexico will launch their tournament next Thursday against South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca. Following that match, Javier Aguirre’s side will take on South Korea on June 18 and wrap up the group stage against Czechia on June 24.
