Miami’s Alba: A Heartfelt…

Inter Miami defender Jordi Alba has revealed that he has changed his mind regarding his future after signing a contract extension with the club through the 2027 Major League Soccer season, opting instead to retire from football at the end of this season.

“I did renew my contract in May, but those discussions started much earlier. While the time from May to now isn’t very long, I’ve been contemplating this decision for a while. It’s been about three to four weeks since I informed the club,” Alba said.

“It was important for me to communicate this decision myself. I believe this choice is the most honest and fair. Physically, I’m still in good shape, but after weighing everything, I’ve decided that stepping back is the right move for me.”

“Like anyone, I can change my mind. My thoughts on this have evolved over several months. I don’t want to be in a position where I’m not fully committed or able to give my best. I think it’s time to step aside.”

Alba’s career will conclude at the end of the 2025 MLS season after spending two years with Inter Miami.

Head coach Javier Mascherano acknowledged that Alba’s retirement will be a significant loss for the team, though they were aware of it in advance.

“It’s tough. We knew it wouldn’t be a surprise, as he and Busquets informed the team before it was made public,” Mascherano stated.

“Often, you can sense changes, but it always surprises you when a player is still in their prime. Alba is physically fit and plays regularly with few injuries.”

“Personal choices play a role, and opting to retire doesn’t always stem from a decline in performance or repeated injuries. Everyone handles these decisions differently. What’s important is that he feels at peace with it.”

“He is fully convinced of his decision, knowing that he could continue playing for another year or two, but he wishes to retire and embrace a different chapter in his life, which is perfectly valid.”

Alba joined Inter Miami in 2023, alongside his long-time teammates Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi. He played a key role in the team that won the 2023 inaugural Leagues Cup trophy, the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, and helped set the league record for most points in a single season.

Before joining Miami, Alba secured six LaLiga titles and a Champions League trophy during his 11 years with Barcelona.

His impressive 16-year career will now conclude as he seeks one final achievement with Inter Miami as they head into the MLS playoffs.
