Michael Carrick has assured his Manchester United squad that they will not become complacent despite their strong recent performances as they aim for a return to the Champions League.
Following their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday, United climbed to third place, marking their sixth win in seven matches since Carrick took over in mid-January. They now boast the strongest form of any team in the league since his arrival.
The challenge for Carrick lies in maintaining this momentum, especially with several teams still vying for Champions League qualification.
“Football is a tough sport,” Carrick stated. “It’s about staying in the moment and keeping our feet on the ground while recognizing what it takes to win matches.”
“We won’t let ourselves get carried away; we need to leverage the confidence we’ve gained while acknowledging that winning streaks are hard to achieve. Our hunger for more is strong, and we must strive for consistency.”
When Carrick arrived, United were in seventh place, having secured only two wins in their previous eight league outings, making their transformation quite remarkable.
“I wouldn’t say I was surprised,” Carrick responded when asked if the team’s success had exceeded his expectations. “It’s important to strive for victories, while understanding the difficulties involved—every match is winnable.”
“I remained focused on immediate tasks rather than speculating about long-term possibilities. We had to act quickly and implement strategies while ensuring the players received the right guidance to prepare for upcoming matches.”
“I’ve had the chance to get to know the players better as we’ve worked together. It’s a talented group, and they have displayed their abilities on the pitch.”
“We also emphasize good habits and fostering a supportive environment. There will be times when we need to dig deep and showcase our team spirit. I can’t praise the players enough at this point.”

United’s chances of securing a place in Europe are firmly in their control, with Aston Villa and Liverpool set to visit Old Trafford later this season, while United will face Chelsea in mid-April.
Carrick stressed that he is concentrating solely on Wednesday’s match at St James’ Park, hoping to have Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire available following illness.
“It’s vital that we remain focused and dedicated,” he mentioned. “Newcastle is an incredibly challenging place to secure a result.”
“We’re not looking beyond the immediate task. We recognize our current position, and Sunday’s performance was a positive step, bringing a boost in energy, confidence, and belief.
“I believe we’re in a solid position, and the players have earned this right to succeed; now we must capitalize on it.”
