UEFA is closely monitoring the evolving situation in the Middle East concerning the upcoming Finalissima match set to take place on March 27 in Doha, Qatar, between Argentina and Spain.
This highly anticipated match pits the European champions against the winners of the Copa América at Lusail Stadium, the same venue where Lionel Messi led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup.
Due to escalating global tensions following U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran, the Qatar football federation announced on Sunday the postponement of all tournaments and matches until further notice. Argentina is also scheduled to face Qatar in a friendly on March 31.
A spokesperson for UEFA stated, “We are monitoring and assessing all developments in coordination with CONMEBOL and the local organizing committee,” as reported by The Associated Press on Monday.
As of now, CONMEBOL and FIFA haven’t issued any official comments regarding the match’s status or venue changes, nor have the football federations of Spain and Argentina.

Spain’s coach, Luis de La Fuente, believes relocating the match would be the most sensible option. “I think it would be best to seek another venue while the current situation persists,” he communicated to RNE Deportes.
He added, “Negotiations are already in progress, and arrangements are being made at all levels. While the top priority is to end the conflict, it is also crucial to consider the logistical aspects given the uncertainty of the situation’s duration.”
The match is particularly significant as it will mark the first encounter between Barcelona‘s rising star, Lamine Yamal, and the legendary Inter Miami CF‘s Messi. Argentina is also set to participate in an international friendly against Qatar on March 31.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo and his club, Al Nassr, have had their matches in the Asian Champions League postponed indefinitely, with a game scheduled for Wednesday in Dubai now canceled.
Due to the recent U.S. and Israel military actions against Iran, multiple events, including Formula 1 races and various football matches, are facing cancellations and travel restrictions. Organizers may need to make critical decisions within weeks regarding the feasibility of events proceeding as planned.
