Mike Bailey, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers captain, has died aged 84 after a long illness.
The midfielder, capped twice by England, began his career with Charlton Athletic before moving to Molineux in 1966. Over 11 seasons with Wolves he made 436 appearances and scored 25 goals, winning the League Cup in 1974 after helping the club reach the UEFA Cup final in 1972. In his final Wolves campaign, 1976–77, he played a key role in their promotion back to the top flight.
Wolves hailed Bailey as the on‑field leader of their late-1960s and 1970s resurgence, admired for his committed tackling, creative passing, occasional spectacular goals, and, above all, his leadership.
After leaving Wolves, Bailey had a brief spell in the NASL with the Minnesota Kicks, then returned to England as player‑manager of Hereford. He went on to manage Charlton, Brighton, Greek club OFI, and non-league Leatherhead.
