MLS Commish Garber Would…

MLS commissioner Don Garber expressed his enthusiasm for the possibility of Liverpool icon Mohamed Salah joining the league, stating he would “love” to have the Egyptian international in MLS if he chooses to make the move.

During a press conference at the SBJ Business of Soccer event in Atlanta, Garber shared his admiration for Salah, remarking: “I couldn’t say that until he announced he was leaving Liverpool. What a fantastic player he would be in MLS, and I believe we could offer him an excellent platform.”

This week, it was revealed that Salah and Liverpool will part ways at the end of the current season, granting the player free agency despite having a year remaining on his contract. Multiple teams are eager to sign the 33-year-old, including Saudi club Al Ittihad, which has pursued him for several years.

MLS has proven its ability to attract top talent, having welcomed players such as Lionel Messi, Son Heung-Min, and Thomas Müller in recent seasons. Just this week, Orlando City announced the signing of French World Cup champion Antoine Griezmann.

Garber reiterated his invitation for Salah to consider MLS, saying, “If [Salah] ever decides to join Major League Soccer, we’d welcome him with open arms. He should connect with Leo [Messi] and Thomas Müller to learn about their positive experiences and success in MLS.”

ESPN sources confirmed that neither San Diego FC, which has Egyptian businessman Sir Mohamed Mansour as its lead owner, nor the Chicago Fire, which has previously pursued star players like Neymar, are currently in pursuit of Salah.

LAFC has opted not to comment on the potential signing of the Egyptian international, but they appear constrained by their roster strategy involving two Designated Players and four U22 slots, which limits their ability to pursue Salah. The team may have the option to adjust their strategy to allow three designated players later this summer when Salah becomes available.

The MLS summer transfer window is scheduled to be open from July 13 to September 2.
