So, how will the showdown between Herons and Whitecaps unfold? ESPN sought insights from Lizzy Becherano and other experts from the U.S. soccer scene to analyze the matchup and predict the MLS Cup winner.

Inter Miami vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
Saturday, 2:30 p.m. ET
Star Player: Unsurprisingly, Messi remains the main attraction in the MLS playoffs, with his performance consistently elevating. The Inter Miami captain has registered six goals and seven assists over five playoff matches, crucially contributing to his team’s scoring opportunities.
Despite not finding the net against New York City FC in the Eastern Conference final, Messi’s impact was still evident through assists to Tadeo Allende and Mateo Silvetti. His unmatched vision and ability to create space in the final third make him a pivotal figure, capable of shining as either a creator or scorer against Vancouver.
X-Factor: Allende is hitting peak performance at a critical moment. Expectations were high when he joined on loan from LaLiga club Celta Vigo at the start of the 2025 season, especially after a rough regular season that impacted his mental health. However, he has now found his stride.
With eight goals and two assists during five playoff matches, including a hat trick to secure a 5-1 win over NYCFC in the Eastern Conference final, Allende tied the league record for most goals in a single postseason. His ability to connect with Messi and Silvetti is crucial; the focus will now extend beyond merely containing Messi.
Tactical Consideration: It’s important to highlight that the Whitecaps already bested Miami in an earlier knockout round, which they did even without the influential Müller. Vancouver eliminated Inter Miami in the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup, winning 2-0 in the first leg and 3-1 in the second. Players like Sebastian Berhalter and Brian White were significant contributors in that success and remain key players for the Whitecaps in the postseason.

Predictions
It’s hard to envision any team being able to halt Inter Miami’s momentum at this stage, especially under head coach Javier Mascherano, who has stimulated such progress through the 2025 playoffs. The Herons have netted four or more goals in their last three postseason matches and have achieved two clean sheets. Plus, they are motivated to secure a trophy for veterans Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets in their last game of illustrious careers. Given their recent defensive enhancements, I don’t foresee anyone, not even Müller, preventing Inter Miami from lifting the MLS Cup. — Becherano
Messi commands attention on the field, effortlessly generating opportunities for Allende, Silvetti, Luis Suárez, and others. Should Inter Miami secure the championship, it will be due in no small part to their strengthened defense. Although it has conceded in three out of five playoff matches, the back line, along with newly appointed starting goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo and improvements on defense, will probably provide enough support for Messi and his teammates to create trophy-winning moments. — Jon Arnold
Inter Miami has effectively rolled through the postseason, especially after overcoming the first-round psychological barrier they faced in 2024. Mascherano’s tactical adjustments—specifically the deployment of Messi as a false nine alongside Allende and Silvetti, while Suárez takes a back seat—have optimized their offensive strategy. The Whitecaps may not be daunted, having defeated Miami convincingly in their previous two encounters earlier in the season. Both teams have bolstered their rosters, with Müller joining Vancouver and Rodrigo De Paul reinforcing Miami, and while Vancouver welcomes back Tristan Blackmon from suspension, it remains challenging to bet against Miami’s current form. — Jeff Carlisle
For the sake of the underdog narrative, I would love to see the Whitecaps triumph. They represent the potential for success in MLS through a cohesive unit and have faced Miami fearlessly, defeating them twice earlier this year. However, the current state of affairs is different. Miami is surging with 17 goals in five playoff games, and Messi has made significant contributions with 11 goals in that span. Given they’ve only suffered one home loss since June, it’s difficult to foresee any different outcome among my colleagues’ predictions. — Cesar Hernandez
I feel compelled to back Miami. Messi enters the MLS Cup having established a league record for goal contributions during a single postseason (six goals, seven assists) and shows no signs of slowing down. With veterans Busquets and Alba potentially concluding their careers with a trophy, and Allende having made history with eight postseason goals, it’s hard not to suggest that this is Inter Miami’s moment. Though Vancouver won’t make it easy, it appears poised for Miami’s victorious year. — Megan Swanick
I can’t shake the feeling that this Miami squad might be the best in MLS history. Their attack is legendary, and according to the American Soccer Analysis, no team has averaged more goals per game than Miami’s 2.51 since 2013. Furthermore, their defensive performance has greatly improved; they have held opponents to 1.0 xG or lower in almost every playoff match, based on FBref. This transformation is significant, as Miami has evolved from prior defensive frailties to become a formidable unit. Coupled with a legendary roster still performing after a demanding year, this team is one that I wouldn’t bet against. — Joseph Lowery
