Lamine Yamal saved Newcastle United from securing a crucial win with a dramatic equalizer in stoppage time. His penalty converted in the dying moments of the match ensured Barcelona left with a draw, giving them the edge as they head into next week’s second leg in the Champions League quarterfinals.
The Spain international struck from the spot in the sixth minute of added time, negating Harvey Barnes’ goal, which had put Newcastle ahead in the 86th minute after Dani Olmo was fouled by defender Malick Thiaw.
The 1-1 scoreline felt unjust for the Magpies, who had controlled significant portions of the match and seemed poised to take a valuable lead to the Nou Camp next Wednesday, with Tino Asprilla’s legendary hat trick from 1997 etched in their memories.
“I’m quite pleased with the outcome, to be honest,” said Barcelona manager Hansi Flick after the match. “We didn’t perform well on the ball and made too many mistakes. Newcastle thrives on that. When they gain possession, their transitions are quick and dynamic. It wasn’t easy, but I appreciate how well we defended together today.”
While Eddie Howe’s squad had to nurse their wounds, they could look back at a performance that posed significant challenges for the five-time winners, ensuring that Barcelona knew they were in for a contest. They would need to brace themselves for more of the same at home.
It’s hard to speculate how the match could have unfolded had Anthony Gordon not been sidelined due to illness, which led Howe to make a pivotal choice by starting Will Osula instead of high-profile signings like Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.
Osula had a chance to give his team the perfect start when he was sent through by Lewis Hall in the sixth minute, but he hesitated and had his shot blocked by Gerard Martín.
Barcelona gradually started to assert themselves, with Yamal and Raphinha coming into the game, while Pedri began controlling the midfield. Dan Burn was thankful to see the ball drift wide of Aaron Ramsdale’s far post after he deflected Raphinha’s cross in the 21st minute.
Ramsdale was forced to tip a powerful shot from Yamal into the side netting two minutes later, while Osula came close with a header from Anthony Elanga’s cross but sent it just over the bar.
Elanga’s 33rd-minute shot was saved comfortably, but Fermín López had a quick attempt that went straight into Ramsdale’s hands just three minutes later.
Garcia intercepted Elanga’s enticing cross in the 57th minute after Osula had cleverly played him in, only for Barnes to force a very nice save from the keeper moments later.
Robert Lewandowski narrowly missed connecting with Raphinha’s cross in the 66th minute, while Barnes hit the post eight minutes later.
However, he redeemed himself by converting Jacob Murphy’s cross four minutes from time, sparking joy among the home crowd.
Unfortunately for the Magpies, in the final moments, Olmo was brought down by Thiaw, leading to a penalty awarded by Italian referee Marco Guida. Yamal converted effortlessly, heartbreaking the Newcastle supporters.
In the closing stages, both Ronald Araujo and Marc Bernal were substituted, with Bernal appearing to suffer discomfort before leaving the pitch.
“Today was very intense,” Flick remarked. “Ronald hasn’t played many games lately due to a long rest, and the same goes for Marc Bernal. They will improve gradually. It’s a challenging atmosphere here. They played excellently, and you have to be fully focused. We managed our defensive performance well.”
