Newcastle United are close to completing a deal for Ajax’s 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur. The club can reinvest after selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur in a move worth up to £100m.
Steur signed a new contract with Ajax last summer that runs until 2028. Even so, the Dutch side face a tricky decision, as his value could dip when he enters the final year of that deal next summer.
The academy graduate became a regular in the second half of last season and, at just 17, started in Ajax’s De Klassieker victory over Feyenoord in December 2025.
According to Opta, among Eredivisie midfielders who began the season aged 18 or younger, Steur ranked first for chances created (15), total carries (231) and duel success rate (56.8%). He was second for passes (623), pass accuracy (89.7%), tackles (20), possessions won (49) and total duels won (46).
