Newcastle’s men’s, women’s and under-21 teams will wear black armbands in their pre-season games to honour Keegan, who took the club up to the Premier League in 1992-93 and to second place in 1995-96.
A minute’s silence will be held before Eddie Howe’s side visit Gateshead for a friendly this Saturday.
At St James’ Park, Keegan’s image will appear on the big screens in the seventh minute—marking the No. 7 shirt he wore—during the men’s fixtures against Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg on 15 and 16 August. The women’s team will make the same tribute against Inter Milan on 16 August, with supporters invited to join a minute’s applause for the former England captain and manager.
Newcastle added that they will consult Keegan’s family on a permanent memorial.
In June, Keegan revealed he had stage four cancer, months after his family first shared in January that he was battling the disease. A statement this week said he was “surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments.”
Keegan’s distinguished playing career included spells with Scunthorpe United, Hamburg and Southampton, and he later managed Newcastle, Fulham, England and Manchester City.
