Nico Dismisses Rodri…

Manchester City midfielder Nico González stated that he doesn’t view himself as a direct substitute for Rodri.

With Rodri unavailable for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Villarreal, Gonzalez will take on his role.

Rodri suffered a hamstring injury before the recent international break, adding to his woes after he spent the majority of the last season sidelined due to knee surgery.

Acquired from Porto in January, Gonzalez was brought in to provide support in central defensive midfield. While he values Rodri’s guidance “every game,” he prefers not to directly compare his abilities.

“I don’t follow the news,” the 23-year-old said during a press conference at Villarreal’s Estadio De la Ceramica. “I’m not aware of what’s being discussed.”

“He’s a teammate and crucial for the team’s success, but I don’t focus on comparisons or pay much attention to that.” Gonzalez added, “I try to absorb as much as I can from him. For instance, during our last match, he provided valuable insights at halftime based on his extensive knowledge of the position.”

“As one of the team captains, his role is vital. He strives to guide us and help us understand the playing style we aim for.”

Gonzalez draws inspiration from Sergio Busquets, a mentor from his time at Barcelona.

“At Barcelona, I admired Busquets since my youth. Once I reached the first team, I played alongside him and learned immensely. He’s undoubtedly the player from whom I’ve learned the most.”

Although Rodri is not fit to play, he has traveled to Villarreal, where he started his professional career, to support the team.

Manager Pep Guardiola is confident that Rodri’s presence will positively influence Gonzalez, noting his continuous improvement on the field.

Guardiola remarked, “Hopefully Rodri will be back training more frequently with him. Naturally, a player of Rodri’s caliber enhances his teammates’ development.”

“With regard to Nico, I sense he’s consistently progressing. Adjusting to a new club and a different playing style can be challenging, but we’re very pleased with his attitude, and I’m certain he will continue to grow month by month and year by year.”

Rodri made his mark at Villarreal after rising through their youth ranks before transferring to Atlético Madrid and ultimately joining City in 2019.

Villarreal coach Marcelino commented on Rodri’s absence, stating it was “a shame” he couldn’t participate, adding, “He is the best player in the world in his position. I know he would have loved to play here, and the Villarreal fans would have cherished seeing him. He is revered and adored here.”
