SAN JOSE, Calif. — NJ/NY Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós emphasized that the players are the “main characters” who will determine the outcome of Saturday’s NWSL Championship against the Washington Spirit at PayPal Park.
“The players are the central figures in the game,” Amorós stated during a press briefing on Friday. “As coaches, our role is to set the stage for them to react appropriately to different situations. However, predicting the game’s result is inherently uncertain, and the responsibility ultimately lies with them.”
Trinity Rodman of Washington is a key player not just for her team but for the entire NWSL in this championship. With her contract expiring soon, sources indicate she is considering offers from teams in England and the USL Super League—options that exceed what the NWSL can provide due to its salary cap.

Following a right MCL sprain last month, Rodman has seen limited action, returning for just the last five minutes of last week’s semifinal win. On Friday, Spirit head coach Adrián González stated that Rodman is “available and ready to compete,” yet he did not clarify her expected playing time.
During Friday’s training session, Rodman worked out with a black sleeve on her right knee, as she has done recently. Just the day prior, she told ESPN that she feels optimistic about her recovery.
“I feel great,” Rodman expressed. “Having an additional week for recovery has been a positive. I’m thankful for the minutes I played last weekend, and I’m hopeful for more time on the field this weekend.”
Saturday’s NWSL Championship will see the Spirit and Gotham meet for the 44th time, setting a record for the most matchups between any two teams in league history. The clubs clashed in the semifinals last year, with the Spirit coming out on top in a penalty shootout.
Gotham clinched the 2023 NWSL Championship as the lowest playoff seed (No. 6), replicating that journey this year by entering as the No. 8 seed. They also hold the title of the reigning Concacaf champions after their triumph in the inaugural regional tournament in May.
The Spirit secured their first NWSL Championship title in 2021 and are now making a consecutive appearance in the finals after losing to the Orlando Pride last year.
After a lively practice session on Friday, González reiterated that the Spirit intend to maintain their established strategy. The season began with González stepping in as head coach (Jonathan Giráldez moved on to coach OL Lyonnes), alongside Rodman’s return from a back injury among several other challenges.
Rodman’s fitness for Saturday’s match is uncertain, and defender Gabby Carle will miss the game due to a hamstring injury sustained in the quarterfinals.
“We take risks every day,” González commented. “We will continue our approach as it has become part of our identity, so there’s no need to change anything at this point. The team understands our objectives and knows what strategies work best.”
Gotham has struggled with consistency this season despite their Concacaf Championship victory, missing out on the playoffs after a loss to the North Carolina Courage on the last day of the regular season and scraping their way into the playoffs before stunning the record-breaking Kansas City Current in the quarterfinals.
“The season has truly been a rollercoaster,” said Gotham midfielder Rose Lavelle. “There have been significant highs and lows, along with some challenging travel. But through it all, we’ve had the opportunity for team rotation and many players stepping up in different roles. This adversity has prepared us for moments like these.”
