NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani:…

Mamdani said New Jersey’s transit tickets to the stadium are close to $100—a choice he understands if it prevents losses. He added that this stems in part from the city’s host agreement with FIFA, but argued World Cups generate enough revenue that fans shouldn’t be the ones covering any shortfall.

Before the tournament, BBC Sport mapped out the group stage and estimated England fans would need around £6,500 to attend all three matches.

At 34, Mamdani noted New York secured measures to help supporters, including free fan zones citywide. He acknowledged initial worries over high ticket prices but said he’s proud the city obtained 1,000 tickets at $50 for each game and organized free fan fests—one in every borough—after dropping planned admission fees. The aim, he said, is for visitors and locals to rediscover the city, with 900 bars and restaurants offering a $26 World Cup meal deal—part of a broader push to keep the event affordable and push back against turning sports into a luxury product.
