Nicolás Otamendi, the 38-year-old centre-back for the Argentina national team, has officially retired from international football.
During his fourth World Cup appearance, Otamendi played his final match as a substitute in the 1-0 extra time loss to Spain in the championship game held on Sunday.
“I am struggling to find the words as I write this,” Otamendi expressed on Instagram.
“I say goodbye to the Argentina national team with immense pride for having represented my country.
“While titles are etched in history, the love for this jersey lasts a lifetime.”
Otamendi made 139 appearances for Argentina over a 17-year international career, scoring eight goals. He contributed to Argentina’s victories in both the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 Copa America.
“From a young age, I dreamed of donning the Argentina national team jersey—it’s the greatest honor football has ever bestowed upon me,” he added.
“I wore it with pride and responsibility, understanding its significance to millions of Argentines. It was destiny that my final match would be in a World Cup final. While the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, I leave with my head held high, proud of how hard our team fought until the very end.
“I say farewell with the comfort of knowing I gave my all. I never held back and always believed in the honor of wearing this shirt.
“Thank you, Argentina, for allowing me to live my dream of being a world champion and for wearing the most beautiful jersey in the world.”
After a successful stint in Europe with clubs such as FC Porto, Valencia, Manchester City, and Benfica, Otamendi has recently joined Argentine club River Plate and is optimistic about the national team’s future.
“To those currently wearing this jersey, please remember: never stop believing,” he advised.
“Setbacks may seem insurmountable, but this jersey rewards those who defend it with humility, sacrifice, and love. Keep fighting, and don’t let defeat steal your hope. I firmly believe the next chapter of our history will belong to you.”
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes is also reflecting on his future with the national team.
Paredes, 32, faced criticism after instigating a brawl on the pitch following Sunday’s final and may face sanctions from FIFA if found guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct.
“For many of us, this is a time to decide about our future with the national team,” Paredes stated.
“The journey has been incredible. Maintaining the current standards and cohesiveness will be a challenge, and we must carefully weigh our options. We need to take our time with this decision.”

Paredes acknowledged Spain’s superiority in the final match.
“Despite all the discussion, Spain played better than us during the final,” the Boca Juniors midfielder admitted.
“They rightfully earned the title of World Cup champions. All we can do now is appreciate what we have accomplished over these eight years. It’s an honor to have been part of this journey—it has been remarkable.”
