Pep Guardiola remarked that next week’s Manchester City clash with Arsenal has taken on a “final” significance following City’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This win puts City just six points behind league leaders Arsenal, with the added advantage of a game in hand.
The second half saw a display of strength from City, with goals scored by Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guéhi, and Jérémy Doku. Meanwhile, Arsenal faced a setback with a 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth, making it possible for City to clinch the championship by winning all seven of their remaining league matches.
The upcoming match against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium is crucial, as the Gunners are also aware that they need to maintain a perfect record in their final six games to secure the title.
Guardiola emphasized that despite the challenges ahead, the Arsenal game has become a potential turning point. “Arsenal is a final,” he stated. “But don’t underestimate [the match against] Brentford on May 9].
“We are going to face a team [Arsenal] that has lost only three games in 49 matches and hasn’t lost a single one in the Champions League.”
Guardiola acknowledged that during the Carabao Cup final, they were considered underdogs, but he believes the current situation is somewhat different.
“I have immense respect for Arsenal, given what they have accomplished in recent years. I know their manager, players, and the quality they bring to each match. That’s our biggest challenge.”
He added, “They have been the top team in this country and in Europe so far. Winning against Arsenal even once is tough—imagine doing it twice within a few weeks.”
Guardiola reflected on the team’s growth, saying, “Being out of the Champions League allows us longer training weeks, and everyone is well aware of their responsibilities.”
City’s victory over Chelsea was driven by Rayan Cherki, whose contributions led to the first two goals scored by O’Reilly and Guéhi, showcasing an outstanding performance.

Guardiola recognized that the summer acquisition from Lyon still has room for growth, despite already tallying 10 assists in his debut season at City. “Rayan is an extraordinary talent,” he explained. “The assist for Marc [Guéhi] was remarkable.”
“The challenge for Rayan is sometimes he ventures too close to [Gianluigi] Donnarumma. He should focus on positioning himself in the final third, near Haaland and the wingers.”
“We will bring the ball to him. There’s no need for him to drop deep.”
“At such a young age, he’s making a significant impact in his first Premier League season and is already an exceptional player. His ambition to improve will be beneficial for both City and himself.”
