Pep Guardiola stated that Manchester City’s pursuit of the title was sparked during last summer’s Club World Cup, which helped to clear the “fog” that had enveloped the club.
Currently, City is in a fierce competition with Arsenal and Aston Villa at the top of the Premier League. They recently secured their sixth consecutive win with a 2-1 triumph over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Guardiola reflected on a challenging previous season, noting that the team’s streak of four consecutive titles ended on a disappointing note.
He deemed the summer tournament, where they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Al Hilal, as vital for instigating change.
“We lacked energy last season,” he remarked. “We began to train and compete more effectively.
“We needed that energy to foster a positive environment. Despite being eliminated by Al Hilal, we played exceptionally well,” he noted. “Then it was time for holidays, and I said, ‘Enjoy your break.’
Nonetheless, Guardiola expressed his disappointment at having to end the training camp in Florida during the Club World Cup, as the preparations were fruitful, and he witnessed healthy competition among the players.
“We were based in Boca Raton near the beach, and everyone was in good spirits,” he shared. “We enjoyed many dinners and discussions about our plans for the next season.
“We wished to extend that experience and embrace it even more.”
“After discussions with [City assistants] Pep [Lijnders], James [French], Manel [Estiarte], Hugo [Viana], and Txiki [Begiristain], we sensed a notable shift,” Guardiola explained. “You could feel something was different.
“This doesn’t guarantee victories, but at least it allows us to recognize our identity as a team. Now we’ve achieved eight consecutive wins.
“Competing at this level is never easy, but we must continue to improve. The mindset we have now is certainly an improvement.”
Guardiola, whose future with the club remains uncertain, admitted feeling rejuvenated as well.
“It’s not about any individual; there was just something… a fog around Manchester, lingering near our training center. We were missing something,” Guardiola observed. “It’s not just about energy switches; the results play a role. The methodology, along with contributions from Pep Lijnders, James [French], and Kolo Toure, has helped.
“With new players, there’s a sense of excitement and a chance for analysis. The energy arises from that connection.
“Energy fluctuates; it can wane but also surge. Nothing remains constant in life, whether professionally or personally. You’ll never be perpetually happy or sad. It’s crucial to acknowledge what we lack in order to rebound.”
