Pep: Haaland’s Impact on…

Pep Guardiola stated that Erling Haaland has reached a goalscoring level comparable to that of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. This claim follows his impressive performance in leading Manchester City to a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth, where he scored twice at the Etihad Stadium.

Currently, Haaland tops the Premier League Golden Boot race with 11 goals this season, leaving him five goals ahead of four players tied at six. He is also just two goals shy of reaching the milestone of 100 league goals for City.

Despite his remarkable form helping City secure second place in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Arsenal, no other teammate has managed to score more than one league goal so far this season.

Guardiola emphasized Haaland’s scoring dominance, stating that he is as dependable and lethal in front of goal as Messi and Ronaldo were at their best. “We played exceptionally well again, and Erling was a key player,” Guardiola remarked. “It’s akin to playing with Messi or Cristiano; the impact is immense.”

“Is he at that level? Look at his numbers; incredible,” Guardiola continued. “Of course, he matches the scoring levels we’ve seen from Cristiano and Messi.” He noted, however, that while Haaland has achieved this remarkable feat, Messi and Ronaldo maintained their form over a span of 15 years. “Even now, Messi continues to score two or three goals in MLS and Cristiano is doing the same in Saudi Arabia.”

“But Haaland is at that level, and without him, our task would be significantly more challenging.”

Guardiola praised Haaland’s desire to score and his eagerness to absorb lessons as crucial aspects of his game. “When he shoots, you can see it’s with the intent to score,” Guardiola said. “I have been tough on him at times, but he is extremely coachable.”

“He is very grounded, seeking improvement, and lives for scoring goals,” Guardiola added.

Next Sunday, City will face Liverpool at the Etihad, a match that could be pivotal for those vying to challenge Arsenal for the title.

Guardiola acknowledged Arsenal’s current form but expressed confidence in his own team’s continual improvement: “I hope Arsenal concedes a goal soon. Since the World Cup, I’ve felt we’re on the verge of something great. But let’s not forget, it’s just ten games into the season; there are still 28 matches left, and plenty can happen. I’m confident our team is getting better.”

With 98 goals in 107 matches, Haaland is on track to become the fastest player to reach 100 Premier League goals, potentially surpassing Alan Shearer, who achieved it in 124 appearances.
