Pep Guardiola has emphasized that the responsibility to secure more trophies lies with six of Manchester City’s Premier League competitors, as they have recorded a higher net spend over the last five years.
Guardiola lightheartedly expressed his disappointment about the club’s activity during the January transfer window, noting that City currently ranks seventh in the net spending chart since the beginning of the 2021 season.
Teams like Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Newcastle have spent more over the past five years, and Guardiola suggested that the focus should be on them for their inability to secure additional titles.
When discussing City’s potential signings of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guéhi in January, Guardiola remarked, “Yes, that’s great. However, I feel a bit sad and frustrated because, in terms of net spending in the last five years, we rank seventh in the Premier League.”
“I want us to be at the top. I don’t understand why the club hasn’t invested more funds. That honestly makes me a bit grumpy.
“As we have performed well in the past due to substantial spending, it’s now up to those six other teams to win the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cups given their higher expenditures over the last five years.
“These are facts, not just opinions. While opinions can vary—like whether we played well or poorly against Spurs—this is an irrefutable reality. I wish luck to those six teams ahead of us in net spending over the last five years. Let’s see what they make of it,” he added with a hint of sarcasm.
Guardiola has the opportunity to guide City to their fifth Carabao Cup final when they face Newcastle in the semifinal second leg at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
Unfortunately, he will be missing Guehi due to eligibility issues, while Rayan Cherki’s availability will depend on an assessment after he sustained a knock in the recent 2-2 draw with Tottenham.

Additionally, Rúben Dias returned to training on Sunday, putting Guardiola in a position to decide whether to include the Portuguese international in the lineup.
“We have the chance to reach our fifth Carabao Cup final in ten years,” Guardiola remarked.
“While I would always prefer to start with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, I am well aware of Newcastle’s capabilities and the pride they take in being a Champions League team.
“We need to be ready, evaluate how our players recover from a demanding game against Spurs, and perform well in front of our supporters as we aim for a trip to Wembley in March.”
