Pep Guardiola has fervently defended his team selection after Manchester City suffered a 3-0 defeat against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the Bernabeu.
Guardiola chose a bold, attack-oriented strategy, which has led to criticism given the outcome. He noted that opinions on tactics often change based on results, arguing that similar choices are praised when they lead to victory.

Guardiola expressed his frustrations, stating, “This isn’t the first time I’ve felt the sting of defeat. I’ve experienced numerous losses in the Champions League and been heavily criticized for my decisions. My choices come under fire when we lose, but if we win, everyone calls me a ‘genius.'”
He continued, “I’ve faced this criticism for over a decade, and it’s clear that until I convince you otherwise, your opinion is shaped by the outcome—a 3-0 loss just emphasizes that.”
Guardiola reflected on his past experiences, recalling the aftermath of City’s loss to Chelsea in the 2021 Champions League final, where he took a similar approach by leaving Fernandinho and Rodri out of the starting lineup.
“I played that final without my two holding midfielders and faced backlash,” he noted. “But at that time, I was confident in my decision to leave those players on the bench. They weren’t performing as well then.”
He countered with his decision-making for last weekend’s FA Cup match against Newcastle, stating, “Before that game, people questioned my team selection: ‘How can you leave Erling [Haaland] out?’ after a 3-1 win.”
Guardiola again defended his tactics in Madrid: “After the match, I explained there was a strategically logical reason behind my choices. I aimed for a threat in front of goal and to ensure our wingers were a constant danger. We executed this well for the first 20 minutes.”
As City prepares for their upcoming Premier League match against West Ham, they aim to maintain pressure on Arsenal in the title race. Top scorer Haaland has faced challenges lately, managing only four goals in his last 17 games. Guardiola acknowledged, “He, like the team, needs to find the net more consistently.”
