Pep Guardiola has expressed his belief that James Trafford is on the path to become England‘s top goalkeeper “sooner or later.”
Trafford, a product of the Manchester City academy, returned to the club this summer after a two-year stint with Burnley. This move likely positions him to take over as Guardiola’s starting goalkeeper with Ederson having moved to Turkey.
Although he started City’s first three matches in the Premier League, Trafford has since fallen to second choice behind Gianluigi Donnarumma, who joined the squad on deadline day.
Trafford is expected to start in goal for City during their upcoming Carabao Cup fourth-round match against Swansea City on Wednesday.
“We are very pleased he is with us,” Guardiola remarked about Trafford during a press briefing on Tuesday.
“He needs to be prepared for when we require him in the Premier League or Champions League. We have an outstanding goalkeeper who will undoubtedly become England’s number one eventually.”
Guardiola was also asked if Trafford was gaining insights from his new Champions League-winning teammate. He replied, “They learn from one another. Goalkeepers are inherently connected in that way.
“Just as I learn from the players, they can also learn from the coaching staff.”

Guardiola also provided updates on the injuries of Abdukodir Khusanov, Rodri, and Erling Haaland.
The Norway striker collided with the opposing goalkeeper during City’s match against Aston Villa on Sunday.
“Khusa is set to play a few minutes tomorrow, but Rodri is not yet ready,” Guardiola noted.
“His condition is improving, and he has been training with us partially. Considering his previous muscular injuries, we will monitor his progress closely this week.
“As for Erling, I haven’t seen him today, but he did sustain a knock, and he is improving day by day. We will know more after today’s training session on how he is feeling.”
