MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged his players not to assume victory in the Premier League title race just because they defeated Arsenal, reminding them that Mikel Arteta’s team still holds the top position.
City narrowed the gap to three points following a 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Guardiola’s squad could move to first place if they secure a win in their game in hand against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday.
However, he emphasized that there is still much work ahead in the title chase.
“Who is currently at the top of the league?” Guardiola asked after the match. “It’s not us. They have a better goal difference.
“We must take it step by step. Nevertheless, we have hope and will continue to fight until the very end.”
Guardiola also revealed an injury concern going into the Burnley match, as Rodri sustained a groin issue during the game against Arsenal.
The Spanish midfielder appeared to be in pain when he was substituted just two minutes from the final whistle, and Guardiola mentioned that Rodri will undergo tests to determine the extent of the injury.
“It’s something with the groin,” Guardiola stated regarding Rodri’s condition. “The doctors will conduct tests either later or tomorrow.”

City’s triumph over Arsenal was clinched by a second-half goal from Erling Haaland.
The match was a thrilling affair, with both sides hitting the woodwork and Kai Havertz missing a golden opportunity to equalize in the 95th minute with a free header in the City penalty area.
“I believe we witnessed the best two teams in England — it was a solid advertisement for football globally,” Guardiola commented.
“Both teams employed man-marking, attacked well, and played quickly with some strategic play. There’s nothing more to say.
“I would have been content with either a draw or a defeat. After seeing my team’s performance, what can I complain about? I am extremely proud of them because they are at the top.”
