Poch: USMNT Must Avoid…

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States men’s national soccer team coach, Mauricio Pochettino, outlined his goal for the next six months: to enhance the team and demonstrate “full respect” towards their World Cup group stage opponents.

The identity of those opponents became clearer on Friday with the completion of the draw for next summer’s World Cup. The U.S. finds itself in Group D, competing against Australia, Paraguay, and the winner of a playoff involving Kosovo, Romania, Slovakia, and Türkiye.

Türkiye, currently ranked 25th by FIFA, is favored to progress. Though the U.S. recently triumphed against Australia and Paraguay in friendly matches, Pochettino emphasized the need for further development.

“Nothing can be taken for granted,” Pochettino stated. He aims to foster a competitive atmosphere where every player’s position is uncertain.

“In the next six months, we need to reassess everything,” Pochettino explained in the mixed zone after the draw. “We understand them, but they understand us too. Our main focus is evolution and continuous improvement as a team to ensure we are stronger by the time we compete.”

“The goal is clear: be better and show utmost respect towards Paraguay and Australia, and the fourth team we’ll identify in March. I’m optimistic and anticipating the World Cup, aiming to be in peak condition.”

When asked about his feelings regarding the draw, Pochettino noted it wasn’t about happiness but rather being prepared and optimistic about the team’s capabilities.

“Entering the room, you wait to see what unfolds and maintain optimism, truly trusting in our strengths and our players’ ability to compete,” he remarked.

The USMNT might hold an advantage in rematches due to their experimentation with different tactics over the past months.

“The flexibility we’re establishing is crucial, as adapting to various systems takes time,” Pochettino mentioned. “We started this process but it didn’t happen instantly, which is understandable.”

“We’re pleased with our development as a team, progressing not only in terms of aggression and competition but also tactically. The knowledge of what is required is increasing, and we continue to improve. That is the main objective.”

The USMNT’s first match in Group D is scheduled against Paraguay on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

“Every game in the World Cup presents a challenge,” stated USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams after the draw.

“Regardless of who we face, we believe we have the capability to achieve something special. Now that the draw is complete, the excitement is growing and it feels more tangible.”

“We’re heading into the World Cup with a positive mindset,” USMNT captain Christian Pulisic shared shortly after the draw. “Having played together for so long, since our youth days, and being able to compete in a World Cup on home soil is a dream come true. It’s an incredible opportunity.”
