The U.S. men’s national team roster for the upcoming March international window is under close examination. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will scrutinize the 27 players selected for matches against Belgium and Portugal.
However, beyond the inevitable evaluations, Pochettino emphasizes the importance of adaptability.
While the importance of these matches pales in comparison to the upcoming World Cup, they serve as a critical opportunity for the USMNT. This window is the last gathering before the World Cup roster is finalized in May, making it essential for refining personnel and tactics. For some players, this may be their final chance to secure their place on the team.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Pochettino reassured those not included in the March roster—such as Alejandro Zendejas and Diego Luna—that their opportunities are not entirely gone.
“It’s not closed because injuries and the dynamics of the group can change based on who is selected,” Pochettino stated.
Pochettino clarified that there are no strict criteria for player selection as he assembles a 26-player roster for the World Cup.
“The key factor is what each player can contribute to the team and whether they are the right fit,” he explained. “That’s why we don’t apply the same rules to everyone, as each player has unique character traits, profiles, qualities, and talents. The aim is to identify the best selections while maintaining our performance level from the last two camps.”
One player notably benefiting from this flexibility is Gio Reyna. Though his recent performance leaves much to be desired—having played only 26 minutes in two appearances for Borussia Mönchengladbach this year and none in the last two months—he remains on the midfield roster.
“He’s an incredibly talented player,” Pochettino remarked about Reyna. “We know he can enhance the national team… even if he hasn’t had much playing time at club level, his skill can be quite advantageous for us.”
Pochettino seems enchanted by Reyna’s talent. This creates high stakes for Reyna, who must seize this opportunity, especially since his performance at the club level has not been stellar.
Reyna isn’t the only player to gain from Pochettino’s flexible approach, especially amidst the ongoing injury struggles of the USMNT. Defensive stalwarts like Sergiño Dest, Tyler Adams, and forward Haji Wright, along with Zendejas and Luna, have been ruled out or haven’t sufficiently recovered from injuries.
Injuries are an unfortunate but inevitable part of the sport, and while no team maintains its full squad at the World Cup, the high frequency of injuries among USMNT players at crucial times is frustrating.
The impact of these absences varies, but they are significant nonetheless.
On March 8, Dest suffered a hamstring injury. His attacking prowess makes him a notable loss, even if his position on the right side is filled by a skilled replacement like Timothy Weah.
The situation further deteriorated over the weekend when Adams went from feeling “in rhythm” to missing the squad entirely due to a quad injury, which Pochettino revealed would sideline him for “two to three weeks.”
Wright, who was in excellent form with six goals in six matches, had to exit his last game against Southampton due to a groin issue.
Pochettino acknowledged the challenges posed by injured players: “It’s tough because these matches present a significant opportunity to evaluate players before making final decisions. Their absences can influence the selection process, both positively and negatively, but the priority is that they recover quickly and are able to perform for a chance at the final roster.”
Fortunately, not all news regarding injuries is negative for the USMNT.
Antonee Robinson returns to the national team fold for the first time since participating in Concacaf Nations League matches in November 2024. His ability to contribute on both defense and offense sets him apart from other left back/wingback options.
Johnny Cardoso of Atlético Madrid is hitting his stride at just the right time, having overcome injury setbacks to establish himself as a reliable player in the Atlético lineup. While his international performance has yet to resonate, his composure on the ball is a valuable asset for the team.
Christian Pulisic, a key figure alongside Adams, has experienced a recent dip in form and fitness, though he showed improvement in his last match against Lazio, despite a goalless streak reaching 11 games. Although his starting spot remains safe, Pochettino will focus on elevating Pulisic’s performance during this camp.
“Christian is playing well and while he hasn’t scored, I focus on more than just goals,” Pochettino stated. “I’m pleased with his current form and level of play. This moment offers him a great chance to integrate with the team and to help him reach peak condition for the final roster selection.”
The next two weeks will reveal which players can capitalize on their opportunities.
